Karoline Schneider

jama: pśichod / Pit: Future

21/02/—19/04/26

Conceived as a multimedia installation, the expansive space interweaves different thematic focuses and elements. Following the logic of a loose parcours, the exhibition invites visitors to explore the various chapters, like the landscape itself, on a walk. Through numerous, sometimes symbolically charged objects, video works, ceramic pieces, and the use of augmented reality, past, present, and future become simultaneously tangible and visible as a constantly evolving cultural process.

The exhibition addresses different aspects of Sorbian/Wendish identities and their future scenarios in various areas of everyday social life. Karoline Schneider connects narratives about landscapes, traditions, language(s), minority cultures, and resilience as identity-forming factors. However, the artistic reflection not only summarizes the historical conditions and components, but also develops designs for critical self-empowerment in relation to the hegemony of majority cultures, as well as the norms of one’s own culture. Inscribed in the exhibition chapters and the various groups of works are sketches of ideas for a „serbski futurizm,“ a Sorbian Futurism. Here, tradition is rethought, collective memory is questioned, and perspectives on future identity, belonging, and self-representation are revealed.

jama: pśichod / Pit: Future is the first solo exhibition by Karoline Schneider (born 1986, lives and works in Leipzig) to be shown in a museum.

With the kind support of the Foundation for the Sorbian People, a publication with further texts will be released to accompany the exhibition.
