In professionellen Studio-Bedingungen sind so überraschende und einzigartige Porträts entstanden. Unter den Protagonist*innen sind erfahrene Darsteller*innen wie die Schauspielerinnen Sarah Gordy (GB) und Lily Moore (USA), die Mehrzahl von ihnen führt jedoch ein Leben außerhalb des Rampenlichts. Radical Beauty verwischt die Grenzen zwischen den Disziplinen. In der engen Zusammenarbeit zwischen Model und Fotograf*in sind beeindruckende Werke entstanden, welche die Lust am Rollenspiel und am visuellen Experiment transportieren und die einzigartigen Persönlichkeiten der Porträtierten eindrücklich widerspiegeln: Ob zärtliche Intimität, nüchterner Realismus oder pralle Lebensfreude – Radical Beauty zelebriert alle Facetten des menschlichen Seins und feiert die Vielfalt einer inklusiven Gesellschaft.

Ins Leben gerufen wurde Radical Beauty im Jahr 2018 von dem britischen Kollektiv Culture Device, einer Gruppe von Down-Syndrom-Performer*innen, die bereits im Londoner Royal Opera House, der Tate Modern und im Southbank Centre aufgetreten sind. Unter der künstlerischen Leitung von Daniel Vais ist seitdem ein globales Projekt entstanden, welches zur Sichtbarkeit von Menschen mit kognitiven Behinderungen beiträgt und Menschen mit Down-Syndrom eine Bühne bietet.

Radical Beauty challenges our understanding of beauty, attractiveness, and aesthetics. In this globally unique photographic project, over 60 internationally renowned fashion and art photographers collaborated with people with Down syndrome to create individual images and photo series. The resulting portraits, shot in professional studio settings, are surprising and unique. Among the protagonists are experienced performers such as actresses Sarah Gordy (UK) and Lily Moore (USA), though the majority lead lives outside the spotlight.

Radical Beauty blurs the boundaries between disciplines. The close collaboration between model and photographer has resulted in impressive works that convey the joy of role-playing and visual experimentation, vividly reflecting the unique personalities of those portrayed: from tender intimacy and stark realism to exuberant joie de vivre – Radical Beauty celebrates all facets of human existence and the diversity of an inclusive society.

Radical Beauty was launched in 2018 by the British collective Culture Device, a group of performers with Down syndrome who have already performed at London’s Royal Opera House, Tate Modern, and Southbank Centre. Under the artistic direction of Daniel Vais, it has since become a global project that increases the visibility of people with cognitive disabilities and provides a platform for people with Down syndrome.
