In Anknüpfung an die gleichnamige Ausstellung in Cottbus von 2022 versammelt die Gruppenausstellung im Packhof Frankfurt (Oder) Werke von Künstlerinnen, die in der DDR sozialisiert wurden und stellt sie Positionen von Künstlerinnen der Volksrepublik Polen (PRL) gegenüber. In stilistischer Vielfalt spiegeln sich in Malerei, Collage, Handzeichnung, Grafik, Fotografie und Plastik die Erfahrungen der kulturellen und gesellschaftspolitischen Um- und Aufbrüche der 1980er und 1990er Jahre.

Zwar standen die Künstlerinnen aus der DDR und der VR aufgrund des 1981 verhängten Kriegsrechts und der Schließung der Grenzen nicht in direktem Austausch. Die künstlerischen Werke korrespondieren dennoch über ähnliche Erfahrungen in Sozialismus und (christlich geprägtem) Patriarchat. Mit expressivem Gestus, Humor und Lebenslust, aber auch Nachdenklichkeit wurde das Selbstverständnis von Künstlerinnen, überkommenen Rollenbildern und Klischees neu situiert, nicht selten mit tradierten Formen künstlerischer Ausdrucksweisen gebrochen. Das Hinterfragen staatlicher Politik sowie die offensiv formulierte Haltung zur Autonomie des Künstlerinnensubjekts und dessen Arbeit nahm wesentlichen Stellenwert ein. Neben kritischen Zeitkommentaren und entfremdeten Selbsterzählungen wurde insbesondere die Arbeit mit und am (eigenen) Körper zum Gegenstand pointierter Bildreflexionen weiblicher Identitäten.

Building on the 2022 exhibition of the same name in Cottbus, this group exhibition at the Packhof in Frankfurt (Oder) brings together works by female artists socialized in the GDR and juxtaposes them with positions held by female artists from the Polish People’s Republic (PRL). Through a stylistic diversity encompassing painting, collage, drawing, graphic art, photography, and sculpture, the works reflect the experiences of cultural and socio-political upheaval and transformation during the 1980s and 1990s.

Although the artists from the GDR and the PRL could not engage in direct exchange due to the imposition of martial law in 1981 and the closure of borders, their works nonetheless resonate through shared experiences of socialism and a (Christian-influenced) patriarchal society. With expressive gestures, humor, and a zest for life—as well as a contemplative spirit—they redefined the self-conception of female artists and challenged established gender roles and clichés, often breaking with traditional modes of artistic expression. Questioning state policy and asserting a bold stance on the autonomy of the female artist and her work played a central role. Alongside critical commentary on the times and narratives of self-estrangement, the use of—and engagement with—the (artist’s own) body became a particular focus for incisive visual reflections on female identities.
